Melt Shop Operator – Steel Manufacturing (Temp to Perm)

Pay Rates:

  • Day Shift: $48.23 per hour
  • Night Shift: $62.69 per hour
  • Plus 16.5% Superannuation

Join one of Australia’s leading steel manufacturers in a hands-on operational role within a fast-paced Melt Shop environment. We are seeking safety-focused, mechanically minded operators with experience working around heavy industrial machinery and large-scale production equipment.

This is an excellent opportunity to secure long-term employment with strong earning potential, structured training, and a stable rotating roster provided six months in advance.

About the Role

Working within a 24/7 steel manufacturing environment, you will be trained across multiple operational areas including furnace operations, refining, casting, crane operations, and production support. This role requires strong situational awareness, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to work safely in a high-temperature industrial environment.

You will play a key role in supporting safe and efficient steel production while maintaining high operational and housekeeping standards.

What We’re Looking For

  • Valid LF Forklift Licence (essential)
  • Current Crane Licence (highly regarded)
  • Ability to pass a mechanical aptitude assessment
  • Previous experience in steel manufacturing, foundry, refinery, mining, heavy manufacturing, processing plants, or similar heavy industrial environments
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and teamwork
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to follow operational procedures and safety systems
  • Willingness to learn, rotate across departments, and contribute to shift performance
  • Reliable work ethic and ability to work rotating 12-hour shifts

Important:

This is a heavy industrial steel manufacturing role – not a warehouse or civil plant operator position.

Candidates with experience limited to warehouse forklift driving, logistics/dispatch, or operating machinery such as excavators, bobcats, skid steers, loaders, or rollers will not be considered for the role.

Key Responsibilities

You will be trained and rotated across several operational areas, including:

Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)

  • Assist with furnace operations including lancing, tapping, and slag management
  • Monitor production processes and support safe steelmaking operations

Ladle Furnace & Refining

  • Monitor steel temperature and chemistry
  • Support refining processes to meet production specifications

Casting Operations

  • Assist with billet casting and slide gate control
  • Respond to and manage breakout incidents safely and efficiently

Crane Operations

  • Operate scrap, charging, and hot metal cranes (where licensed)
  • Assist with movement of raw materials and production equipment

Quality & Laboratory Support

  • Conduct sampling and quality checks on billets and molten steel
  • Maintain accurate production and operational records

General Operations

  • Maintain high housekeeping standards
  • Follow lockout/tagout and safety procedures
  • Support shift handovers and team communication

Roster & Benefits

Rotating Shift Pattern

  • 2 Days – 6:00am to 6:00pm
  • 2 Nights – 6:00pm to 6:00am
  • 4 Days Off

Rosters are provided six months in advance, allowing you to confidently plan personal time, holidays, and family commitments.
